WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF MEASUREMENT IN BUILDING AUTOMATION?

FSM AG transmitters are used in the field of building automation. Measurement systems and devices for this area are usually summarized under the term MSR (measurement, control and regulation technology). The measuring tasks in this area are manifold. In order to control an HVAC system (abbreviated to heating, ventilation and air conditioning technology), the actual data of the system to be controlled are first recorded. Depending on the system and application, differential pressures, temperature and humidity, as well as CO2 or VOC values are recorded, for example, to determine the air quality of the reference system. Based on the recorded actual values and the defined target values, the system then regulates the ventilation system according to demand; for example, if the CO2 value is elevated, more fresh air is supplied. Specific measuring systems are also used in the field of heating, ventilation and air conditioning technology to determine the volume flow in the ventilation duct or to monitor the degree of filter contamination.

Filter monitoring

The quality of indoor air is currently becoming increasingly important. Filters are used to monitor the condition of the air in rooms. Our differential pressure transmitters are installed in air conveying systems such as ventilation systems or components of plant engineering and mechanical engineering. In air conveying systems, the conveyed air is to be cleaned from certain substances and particles by using filters. Over time, the filters become increasingly dirty. In order to continue to ensure constant air delivery, the filter contamination must be reduced. Therefore, the capacity of the plant is usually increased. This in turn is associated with a high energy consumption of the plant and losses of the filter. By using our differential pressure transmitters, continuous monitoring of the degree of filter fouling is achieved. Early failure detection also minimizes energy consumption and ensures consistently high air quality.

How does filter monitoring by means of differential pressure measurement work?

See in the video how differential pressure transmitters are used to monitor the degree of contamination of filters in ventilation pipes.

Volume flow control

In modern building technology, the requirements regarding the energy efficiency of ventilation systems are constantly increasing. At the same time, the volume flow in the duct must be kept above a hygienically necessary limit value. By using high-precision differential pressure transmitters, the balancing act between maintaining minimum volume flows and simultaneously energy-efficient operation can be realized. The cross-sectional area of the duct and the k-factor of the differential pressure transducer can be parameterized via software for precise determination of the volume flow by means of differential pressure transducers.

Indoor air quality measurement

Awareness of the importance of high air quality has increased enormously in recent years. An air quality indicator cannot be defined uniformly, but depends on the requirements of specific applications and thus on various influencing variables. The most common measured variables for determining air quality are temperature, humidity, CO2 and VOC levels, as well as particulate matter. For the demand-oriented control of ventilation systems and the compliance with limit values, transmitters are used that precisely determine and display the parameters and communicate them to the building management system. High-quality measurement systems in building automation thus ensure high air quality with maximum energy efficiency.
